Brazil STF Minister authorizes operations against journalist's sources
Supreme Federal Court (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes has authorized search and seizure operations targeting individuals identified as sources for journalist Luís Pablo Conceição Almeida. The investigation follows reports published by the journalist regarding the alleged irregular use of official vehicles by Minister Flávio Dino and his family members in Maranhão.
Moraes defended the measures, stating that constitutional source confidentiality is not a shield for criminal activities. He noted that the Federal Police and the Prosecutor General's Office identified material evidence and strong indications of criminal authorship among the investigated individuals.
The decision has sparked significant backlash from press freedom organizations. The Inter-American Press Association (SIP) described the move as a ‘grave threat’ and a ‘dangerous precedent’ for journalism in Brazil. Other domestic associations have also expressed concern over the potential for an intimidating effect on whistleblowers and journalists.
In response to the controversy, STF President Edson Fachin expressed solidarity with Minister Flávio Dino and emphasized that while threats to ministers must be investigated, judicial inquiries must target specific criminal conduct and never infringe upon legitimate journalistic activity or the constitutional right to source confidentiality.
