Inter Lagos fined and penalized by NPFL for assault on match officials

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed significant sanctions on Inter Lagos following an incident involving the assault of match officials during a Matchday 7 fixture against Katsina United. The club has been fined a total of N5.25 million and stripped of three points and three goals.

The league stated that Inter Lagos failed to provide adequate security, allowing unauthorized individuals to access restricted areas. This resulted in match officials being held hostage for over an hour. During the incident, the club's team manager and supporters reportedly intimidated, harassed, and verbally abused the officials. An assistant referee sustained a facial injury and lost personal property, including a damaged mobile phone.

The financial penalties include N2 million for security failures, N1 million for holding officials hostage, N2 million for the assault, and N250,000 in compensation for the injured assistant referee.
