Nigeria Premier Football League officiating and security

Overview

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) have taken steps to address officiating and security concerns during the 2026/27 season.

Initially, the NFF Refereeing Development Committee issued formal warnings to officials regarding incorrect decisions and “gross misrepresentation” of the Laws of the Game. To safeguard competition integrity against match-fixing, the NFF ordered the deployment of monitors to all match centers to report misconduct directly to the Acting General Secretary for potential disciplinary action, including dismissal or prosecution.

Following these concerns, the NPFL imposed heavy sanctions on Inter Lagos after a Matchday 7 fixture. The club was fined N5.25 million and stripped of three points and three goals after match officials were held hostage for over an hour. The incident, which involved intimidation and verbal abuse by the team manager and supporters, resulted in a facial injury to an assistant referee and the loss of personal property.
