Poland train collision: One dead and 20 injured after truck hits Intercity train

A fatal train collision occurred in Sokolniki Suche, Poland, on September 9, 2026, when a cement mixer truck entered a railway crossing despite active light signals. The PKP Intercity train, ‘Koziołek’, traveling from Lublin to Szczecin with approximately 120 passengers, collided with the vehicle, causing the locomotive and six carriages to derail.

The accident resulted in the death of a 39-year-old female passenger and left approximately 20 people injured, with four in serious condition, including the train driver and the truck driver. Investigators are examining the scene, having secured the driver's cabin recorder. The truck driver reportedly claimed he was blinded by the sun during the incident.

In response to the tragedy, the Railway Drivers' Union launched a nationwide protest on September 11, instructing drivers to traverse all level crossings at a reduced speed of 20 km/h to demand increased safety measures. This action caused significant delays across the Polish rail network. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced that the government will work to radically tighten regulations for those who violate level crossing rules.
