Poland railway safety and Sokolniki Suche collision

Overview

On September 9, 2026, a PKP Intercity ‘Koziołek’ passenger train traveling from Lublin to Szczecin collided with a cement mixer truck at a level crossing in Sokolniki Suche, Mazovia. The impact caused the locomotive and six carriages to derail, with the locomotive overturning onto the opposite track. The accident resulted in the death of a 39-year-old female passenger and approximately 20 injuries; at least four people, including both the train driver and the truck driver, were reported to be in serious condition.

The truck driver reportedly told authorities he was “blinded by the sun” when entering the crossing, despite the presence of functioning light signals. Prosecutors have secured the train’s cabin recorder to investigate the exact circumstances.

In response to the tragedy and recent collisions in Gdańsk, Suwałki, and Jastrowie, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called for an urgent review and radical tightening of regulations for drivers who ignore railway signals. Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak has proposed suspending the licenses of drivers who enter crossings while red lights are active for three months, while the Ministry of Justice considers amendments to the Penal Code.

On September 12, the National Council of the Railway Drivers' Trade Union (ZZMK) conducted a nationwide protest, instructing drivers to reduce speeds to 20 km/h at all level crossings. The protest was shortened and concluded at 12:00 PM to mitigate impact, but still caused significant disruptions. Infrastructure Minister Piotr Malepszak noted the action affected roughly 15 percent of all scheduled trains, with PKP Intercity reporting that nearly 90 percent of its trains operating before 10:00 AM experienced delays averaging approximately 30 minutes.
