International cannabis trafficking cases reported in Nigeria and Cambodia
Two separate international drug trafficking incidents involving large quantities of cannabis have been reported in Nigeria and Cambodia.
A Federal High Court in Lagos, Nigeria, sentenced Ting Hong Kiong, a Chinese national, to two years in prison after she pleaded guilty to importing 31 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa. The seizure occurred at Murtala Muhammed International Airport following an Emirates Airlines flight from Bangkok via Dubai. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) prosecuted the case.
In Cambodia, Tamara Martins, a 31-year-old British woman, was detained at Techo International Airport after authorities discovered 34.5 kilograms of suspected cannabis in her luggage. Martins maintains she was unaware of the drugs, claiming a man at a bar offered her money to transport a suitcase she believed contained electronic equipment. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is currently supporting the British national as she remains in detention.
