International Criminal Court faces crisis amid U.S. sanctions

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is facing a critical period following unprecedented sanctions imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The sanctions target 13 members of the court, including President Tomoko Akane.

These measures were implemented in response to ICC arrest warrants issued in late 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant regarding alleged crimes in Gaza. The U.S. administration has characterized the court as an institution acting outside the law and has urged member nations to withdraw from it.

International organizations have called on member states to resist these attempts to obstruct the court's work, which includes ongoing investigations into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine and Palestine. Alessia Schiavon, executive director of the Baltasar Garzón International Foundation (FIBGAR), noted that the sanctions have resulted in frozen assets and restricted travel and banking access for the targeted officials.
