Brazil and Portugal mark International Day of Older Persons

The International Day of Older Persons is being marked across Brazil and Portugal through various community initiatives and health programs. In Brazil, demographic data from IBGE highlights a significant shift, with 35 million citizens aged 60 or older. This aging population is placing increased pressure on the Unified Health System (SUS) and private health insurance providers, as chronic diseases and long-term care needs rise.

To address these needs and celebrate the demographic, several Brazilian municipalities are hosting events. Goiânia is conducting health drives including vaccinations and clinical assessments, while Francisco Beltrão and Araras are focusing on legal rights and fraud prevention. Other cities like São José do Rio Preto are promoting active aging through physical activities and cognitive workshops.

In Portugal, local governments and associations are also organizing celebrations to combat social isolation and promote well-being. Loulé is hosting a month-long program of cultural and health-focused events, while regions in Madeira and Pombal are organizing social gatherings, music festivals, and workshops to support the senior population.
