International medical community renames PCOS to PMOS
After more than a decade of research, advocacy and global consensus, the condition formerly known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) has been officially renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). The change, announced in May and published in The Lancet, reflects the disorder’s broader hormonal and metabolic impacts rather than a focus on ovarian cysts.
Proponents say the new name will improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce misdiagnosis and increase funding for research by emphasizing the syndrome’s multisystem effects, including insulin resistance, cardiovascular risk and endocrine abnormalities. The renaming follows recommendations from the NIH in 2012 and a three‑year plan to seek formal recognition by international bodies such as the World Health Organization.
