International Olympic Committee backs Russian athletes despite Ukraine war

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has reiterated its position that allowing Russian athletes to compete, even under a neutral flag, is a less political response than condemning attacks on sport figures. The decision comes amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, with continued bombings of civilian areas and the abduction of Ukrainian children. While the IOC previously suspended Russia from international competitions following the full‑scale invasion, it now argues that the organization should not politicise sport, despite the war’s impact on athletes and the deaths of Ukrainian sportspeople.

Critics note that the IOC’s stance effectively permits Russian athletes, some of whom may support the Kremlin’s actions, to participate in future games, while refusing to honour Ukrainian athletes killed in the conflict. The editorial highlights the broader debate over separating sport from politics, referencing past examples such as the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
