International Olympic Committee lifts Russia's Olympic suspension

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the provisional removal of the suspension on the Russian Olympic Committee, permitting Russian athletes to take part in qualification events for the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games. Participation will be under a neutral status; the use of the Russian flag and anthem has not yet been approved and will be decided later. Athletes must pass anti‑doping tests before competing.

The move triggered sharp criticism from the Ukrainian Olympic Committee, Czech MEP Tomáš Zdechovský, anti‑doping groups Global Athlete and FairSport, and other officials who argue that Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and its state‑run doping program violate Olympic principles. IOC president Kirsty Coventry defended the decision, citing the neutrality of sport, while Germany’s Olympic Sports Confederation expressed understanding but urged caution. The ruling follows a recent amendment to the IOC charter that reinforces political neutrality.

The decision is expected to affect the composition of upcoming international competitions and reignite debates over the intersection of sport, politics, and ethics.
