International Organization for Migration launches new initiatives in Gambia and Nigeria

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has launched two distinct initiatives aimed at improving migration management and communication in Africa.

In The Gambia, the IOM organized a two-day workshop in Bijilo focused on the essentials of migration management. The training aims to equip journalists, civil society representatives, and digital influencers with skills to provide ethical, evidence-based reporting. The program seeks to counter misinformation and reduce the stigmatization of vulnerable migrants through more accurate narratives.

In Nigeria, the IOM unveiled a 25-year strategic framework titled Migration Vision @25 in Abuja. Marking its silver jubilee in the country, the agency introduced the plan to position Nigeria as a hub for safe and productive migration. Built on the pillars of mobility, opportunity, and resilience, the framework focuses on protecting migrants, expanding regular migration routes, and supporting returning migrants. The initiative comes as Nigeria manages a large internally displaced population due to conflict and climate-related disasters.
