International Skating Union Allows Russian and Belarusian Skaters to Return as Neutrals

The International Skating Union (ISU) announced on 30 June 2026 that the ban on athletes from Russia and Belarus, in place since February 2022, is being lifted for the 2026‑27 season. Skaters and officials from the two countries may compete in ISU events – including world championships, Grand Prix series and the upcoming 2026 Milan‑Cortina Winter Olympics – but only under a neutral status that excludes national flags, anthems and other symbols. Participation will be limited to a reduced quota of athletes, reflecting their long‑term absence from international rankings.

Athletes must not have publicly supported the war in Ukraine at any time since February 2022, in line with International Olympic Committee guidance. The ISU said the decision does not change its condemnation of the conflict nor its support for Ukrainian skaters, and it warned that visa issues could affect competitors in host countries.

The move has drawn criticism from former Russian coach Tatiana Tarasova, who called the partial reinstatement “outrageous” and lamented the loss of four years of athletes’ careers. Nevertheless, the ISU views the policy as a step to separate sport from politics while maintaining competition safety and integrity.
