Interstate 88 exit signs to undergo mile-based conversion in New York
The New York State Department of Transportation is beginning a $1.1 million project to convert exit signs on Interstate 88 to a mile-based numbering system. The project covers more than 117 miles across six counties: Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, Schoharie, and Schenectady.
Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 28, starting in Port Crane and progressing east toward the Interstate 90 and New York State Thruway interchange in Rotterdam. While Exits 1 and 2 will retain their current numbers because they align with their approximate mile locations, other exits will be renumbered. For example, Exit 3 will become Exit 4, and Exit 25 will eventually become Exit 117.
To assist motorists during the transition, signs will temporarily display both the new mile-based numbers and the old sequential numbers. The project is expected to continue through the end of 2026. According to DOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez, the change is intended to help drivers better judge distances and assist emergency responders in pinpointing locations more quickly.
