Interstate 88 exit numbering conversion

Overview

The New York State Department of Transportation has initiated a $1.1 million project to convert exit signage on Interstate 88 to a mile-based numbering system. Spanning approximately 117 miles across six counties—Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, Schoharie, and Schenectady—the project aims to help motorists judge distances and assist emergency responders in locating specific sites.

Work is scheduled to begin on September 28, starting in Port Crane and moving east toward the Interstate 90 and New York State Thruway interchange in Rotterdam. While Exits 1 and 2 will maintain their current numbers due to their alignment with mile locations, other exits will be renumbered. To aid drivers during the transition, signs will temporarily display both the new mile-based numbers and the old sequential numbers. The project is expected to continue through the end of 2026.
