Interstate 88 history and connection of Upstate New York
Interstate 88 (I-88) serves as a vital connection between Binghamton and the Capital Region in Upstate New York, spanning approximately 117 miles. Although the Interstate Highway System was established by the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, I-88 was not part of the original network. It was officially added to the system following the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1968.
Construction of the highway occurred in stages over several decades. The final segment, connecting I-81 near Binghamton to NY Route 7 in Chenango Bridge, was completed and opened in 1989. While initial plans once envisioned the route extending further toward Troy via I-890, those connections were eventually abandoned due to changes in the early 1980s.
The highway provides a direct route for the Southern Tier, Oneonta, Schoharie County, and Schenectady County to reach the New York State Thruway (I-90) in Rotterdam.
