Intibucá farmers quintuple tomato production via ProOccidente project
In the Yamaranguila region of Intibucá, Honduras, fifteen families from the 'Cultivando Nuestra Tierra' association have increased their tomato production fivefold. Previously harvesting between 2,000 and 3,000 pounds per cycle, producers now reach between 12,000 and 16,000 pounds.
Supported by the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) through the ProOccidente project, the initiative utilized an investment of over 729,000 lempiras to install mesh houses, irrigation systems, and water reservoirs with capacities exceeding 50,000 liters. These improvements allow for continuous cultivation during the dry season, reducing dependence on rainfall.
The ProOccidente program is co-financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), with a total budget exceeding $72 million. The project aims to increase sustainable income and food security across 88 municipalities in the Dry Corridor, including La Paz, Intibucá, Lempira, Copán, Ocotepeque, and Santa Bárbara.
