Agricultural modernization in Intibucá, Honduras

Overview

Farmers in the Intibucá region of Honduras are implementing technological improvements to increase crop yields and transition toward protected cultivation.

Through the ProOccidente project, supported by the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) and co-financed by the Inter-American Development Bank and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, tomato producers in Yamaranguila have increased production fivefold. This was achieved through an investment of over 729,000 lempiras to install irrigation systems, water reservoirs, and mesh houses, allowing for cultivation during the dry season.

Strawberry producers in the region are also modernizing through a L5 million investment involving SAG and local farmers. This initiative includes the implementation of protected structures and technical irrigation across nearly 3 hectares. Specific associations, such as APROFIL and APROFRESAL, have received funding for machinery, geomembrane reservoirs, and greenhouse materials. Future plans involve allocating an additional L5 million toward hydroponic production to expand technological options for local farmers.
