INTRANT director implements new traffic management and technical recovery plan
Juan Manuel Méndez García, the executive director of the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (INTRANT) in the Dominican Republic, has announced a multi-phase plan to address systemic traffic issues in Santo Domingo. A primary focus of his administration is the reintegration of specialized technical personnel who previously served the institution, a move discussed with President Luis Abinader to restore institutional expertise.
The proposed strategic plan includes short, medium, and long-term actions targeting road signaling, left-turn regulations, heavy vehicle circulation, and technical vehicle inspections. Méndez is also coordinating with various entities, including the National Transit and Transport Security Directorate (DIGESETT) and the National District Mayor's Office, to manage heavy vehicle traffic on major routes like Avenida 30 de Mayo.
Additionally, authorities have intensified joint operations with the police to enforce traffic laws, specifically targeting motorcyclists for infractions such as riding without helmets or violating traffic lights. Efforts are also underway to improve congestion at critical points, such as kilometer 9 of the Duarte Highway, through better public transport integration and road reordering.
