Dominican Republic: Intrant updates senior licenses and Manzanillo Port advances
In the Dominican Republic, the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (Intrant) has announced compensation measures for drivers over 65 years old following a Constitutional Court ruling. The ruling declared unconstitutional previous restrictions that limited driver's license validity to two years for this age group.
Intrant Director Juan Manuel Méndez García outlined several compensation modalities based on previous payments. Drivers aged 75 or older who paid full fees for a four-year license but only received two years of validity can renew for the remaining two years at no cost. Those who paid a 50% reduced rate for a two-year license can extend it for another two years by paying the remaining 50%. Alternatively, users can opt for a new four-year license by paying the full current rate.
Separately, the construction of the new Manzanillo Port terminal has reached an overall progress of 63.7%, with the pier specifically at 35% completion. Officials from the Ministry of Public Works and APORDOM supervised the site, noting that the project remains on schedule despite technical challenges with the terrain.
Additionally, Intrant confirmed it has settled a RD$3,020,000 debt with the Dominican Medical College (CMD) for services rendered in January, stating it is open to reconciling any further undocumented claims.
