Farmear aura trend moves from social media to physical street battles
The viral trend “farmear aura” (aura farming) has transitioned from digital slang to physical social competitions among Generation Z across Latin America. Derived from video game terminology, “farming” refers to repetitive actions to accumulate resources, while “aura” represents a person's perceived charisma, confidence, or style. In these social challenges, participants compete by performing poses, intense stares, or stylized walks to earn symbolic “aura points” from a crowd.
Physical events are increasingly common in cities across Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, and Peru. In Mar del Plata, Argentina, a competition in Plaza Mitre was reportedly disrupted by individuals throwing stones and bottles at participants. Conversely, organized tournaments in Veracruz, Mexico, and Ciudad Juárez have seen high engagement, with some municipal governments hosting events to engage youth through creative expression.
The phenomenon is heavily driven by platforms like TikTok, where users assign arbitrary numerical values to behaviors, such as “+1000 aura” for impressive actions or “-5000 aura” for social blunders. The trend gained global visibility following viral videos of individuals, such as an Indonesian boy dancing on a boat, embodying effortless confidence.
