Investigation into former MP Ann Widdecombe's murder draws criticism of police handling

Former Conservative MP and Reform UK spokesperson Ann Widdecombe, 78, was found dead with severe head injuries at her remote home in Dartmoor, Devon, on 10 July. Police initially suggested no foul play, later announced an arrest that was quickly reversed, and eventually detained a 28‑year‑old man from Rotherham on suspicion of murder and terrorism. Counter‑terrorism units have now taken over the investigation, which has raised concerns about the safety of current and former MPs.

The handling of the case has been widely criticised. Devon and Cornwall Police delayed a press conference by more than an hour, gave contradictory statements, and were accused of trying to manage public discussion rather than provide clear information. Critics say this approach undermined public confidence and reignited debate over MPs' security protections.

Separately, left‑wing campaign group Hope Not Hate removed a webpage that labelled Widdecombe as “homophobic”. The group said the deletion was a mark of respect following her death, while retaining its analysis of her political record.
