IOC lifts bans on Russian athletes, prompting sharp Ukrainian criticism
The International Olympic Committee announced on 7 July 2026 that it had lifted several restrictions placed on Russian athletes after the invasion of Ukraine. Russian competitors can now take part in team sports and qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, though they will compete without a flag or anthem.
Ukraine’s sports minister Matvii Bidnii denounced the move as hypocritical, noting that it was adopted on a day of mourning in Kyiv after Russian missile attacks that killed at least 28 people and injured around a hundred. He praised World Athletics for maintaining the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian athletes, calling the IOC’s decision a “total lack of respect for sport.”
In football, FIFA is reviewing the possibility of readmitting Russia, while UEFA remains opposed. Moscow is negotiating potential host venues for its “home” matches, with Kazakhstan’s cities Almaty, Aktobe and Shymkent mentioned, and Turkey, Bulgaria and Serbia also under consideration. The IOC’s action and the ensuing debate affect the upcoming qualification process for the 2028 Games and the broader reintegration of Russian sport teams into international competition.
