IPS faces healthcare gaps and funding shortages in Paraguay

The Instituto de Previsión Social (IPS) is facing significant challenges in providing healthcare services across Paraguay due to financial constraints and infrastructure gaps. In J. Eulogio Estigarribia, officials acknowledged that the community's 12,000 insured members lack a local hospital, with the nearest facility located 80 kilometers away in Caaguazú. Dr. Melgarejo, IPS Director of Hospitals for the Interior Area, stated that the institution lacks the necessary funds to construct new facilities and faces difficulties in recruiting medical specialists.

In the Boquerón region, the Hospital de Loma Plata has suspended services for IPS patients after the economic quota established in its contract was exhausted. Ronald Reimer, president of Cooperativa Chortitzer Ltda, noted that the hospital has provided services to IPS members for approximately 30 years because the institution lacks its own hospital in the area. The suspension affects an increasing number of insured individuals, with approximately 23,400 members in Boquerón, many of whom face significant geographic barriers when attempting to access specialized care in Asunción.
