IPS Paraguay faces corruption probe and medical crisis

Paraguay's Public Social Security Institute (IPS) is facing intense scrutiny due to corruption investigations and operational crises. Former IPS President Jorge Magno Brítez has been summoned to testify before the Public Ministry regarding the ‘ghost operating rooms’ case. This investigation focuses on irregularities in a contract with the company Neighpart Saeca for the installation of modular operating rooms. Despite an audit identifying irregularities, Brítez allegedly signed several contract addenda that authorized continued payments to the company for equipment that was never installed at the Hospital Central.

In addition to legal investigations, the IPS is struggling with a systemic crisis involving medical shortages and staffing. While recent efforts have reduced medicine shortages from 63% to 28%, the institution continues to face difficulties in supply and patient scheduling. The institute is also experiencing high turnover rates among doctors and nurses, following recent national strikes and widespread dissatisfaction with the quality of service and administrative management.
