Iquique community cleans Playa Blanca Urban Wetland

In Iquique, Chile, environmental authorities, the local municipality, and the Chilean Navy led a community cleanup and birdwatching event at the Playa Blanca Urban Wetland to commemorate World Shorebird Day. The initiative resulted in the collection of approximately one ton of waste from the 132.6-hectare protected area.

Local officials emphasized the importance of environmental education and community involvement in protecting the coastal biodiversity, which includes species such as the Humboldt penguin, the white tern, and the sootie tern. The event was part of broader efforts including the 100 Actions for Nature and the start of World Beach Cleanup Month.
