Iquique health authorities launch emergency mosquito control

Health authorities in Iquique, Chile, have activated emergency protocols following the discovery of Aedes aegypti mosquito eggs in the northern sector of the city. The Seremi de Salud has deployed Zoonosis and Vector Control teams to inspect homes and public spaces to identify breeding sites and rule out the presence of adult mosquitoes.

While there is currently no local circulation of viruses such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, or yellow fever in the area, the presence of the mosquito poses a significant sanitary risk. Sanitary brigades are conducting door-to-door inspections, checking items such as flower vases, drums, old tires, pet water bowls, and even bottle caps that may hold stagnant water.

Massive disinsectation efforts began this Saturday in the affected sector. Brigades will apply chemical products in streets, alleys, and public spaces to control the vector and prevent further propagation. Authorities are urging residents to eliminate unused water containers and maintain clean, covered water storage to assist in interrupting the mosquito's reproductive cycle.
