Aedes aegypti mosquito detection in northern Chile
Overview
Health authorities in northern Chile have initiated emergency protocols following the detection of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the Tarapacá and Antofagasta regions.
In Iquique, the Seremi de Salud reported the discovery of mosquito eggs, larvae, and adult mosquitoes, including specimens found within the premises of the local Prosecutor's Office. This prompted the deployment of Zoonosis and Vector Control teams to conduct fumigation in approximately 270 properties. While no local circulation of viruses such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, or yellow fever was initially reported, authorities have reinforced surveillance using ovitraps.
In Antofagasta, the mosquito was identified in 20 locations, specifically within the Polideportivo Centenario sector and Tocopilla. Health officials have conducted educational campaigns at local cemeteries, advising citizens to replace water-filled flower vases with damp sand or sponges and to seal containers like buckets and pet bowls.
Following these detections, Senator Danisa Astudillo has called on the Tarapacá Health Seremi to strengthen prevention, inspection, and sanitary surveillance. Citing the constant circulation of people and goods in northern Chile, the senator requested a detailed report on control plans. She proposed intensifying inspections and fumigation in high-traffic areas, such as transport vehicles, terminals, distribution centers, and open-air markets, while recommending extended surveillance in cemeteries, educational establishments, and health centers.
