Health officials issue guidance on sun protection and UV risks

The National Center for Disease Control and Public Health has issued guidance regarding the risks of sun exposure and sunburn, particularly during the summer months. Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can damage skin pigment cells, increasing the risk of premature aging, pigmentation spots, and skin cancer. Furthermore, UV radiation can cause serious vision impairments, such as cataracts.

Symptoms of sunburn may include skin redness, pain, swelling, fluid-filled blisters, fever, weakness, and nausea. Health officials advise against popping blisters and recommend avoiding further sun exposure once burned. Medical assistance is deemed necessary for infants under one year old, individuals experiencing high fever, or those with severe pain and widespread blistering.

To prevent damage, the center recommends limiting sun exposure during peak activity hours. Protective measures include wearing loose-fitting, light-colored clothing made of natural fabrics, wide-brimmed hats, and dark sunglasses. Additionally, the use of sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is advised, to be applied 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every two hours.
