Legal and political dispute involving Irakli Garibashvili
Overview
Imprisoned former Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has alleged that Bidzina Ivanishvili, founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, is pressuring him to confess to crimes he claims he did not commit.
Garibashvili shared an unsigned letter on social media, asserting it was sent on Ivanishvili’s instructions. The letter reportedly offered a compromise regarding corruption cases: Garibashvili would admit to the charges and receive a five-year sentence, which would be absorbed into his existing sentence for a money laundering case. Garibashvili characterized the proposal as an ‘insurance mechanism’ intended to prevent his return to politics and described it as a ‘dirty plan to destroy me and my family’.
In response to these claims, Georgian Dream regional secretary Dimitri Samkharadze questioned the validity of the allegations, noting that the letter’s content suggested Garibashvili was not a devoted supporter. Other observers, such as philosopher Archil Gamzardia, suggested the conflict might stem from Garibashvili expecting different support from Ivanishvili during his legal proceedings.
