Iran executions condemned by EU and 26 other nations
The European Union and 26 to 32 other nations, including France, Canada, and the United Kingdom, have issued a joint statement condemning the ongoing executions of protesters and the use of the death penalty by the Islamic Republic of Iran. The signatories demand an immediate end to capital punishment and the release of all individuals held arbitrarily, asserting that the death penalty is being used to silence dissent and intimidate communities.
UN Human Rights High Commissioner Volker Türk has warned that over 100 people face potential execution on similar charges. Reports indicate that at least 56 people have been executed for national security reasons since the start of recent protests. In Isfahan province alone, more than 70 protesters arrested during early-year demonstrations have reportedly been sentenced to death.
Human rights organizations have noted that the use of the death penalty has increased following the outbreak of regional conflict in February. Specific reports highlight that 24 Baluchi and 22 Kurdish individuals were executed under charges such as ‘enmity against God’ and ‘corruption on Earth’. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot characterized the situation as an ‘unbearable and inhumane repression’ that must cease.
