Iran and Afghanistan experience extreme heat above normal levels

Iran’s meteorological agency reported that the national average temperature from the start of the month to July 27 was 30.3 °C, about 1 °C higher than the long‑term average of 29.3 °C. Over the previous seven days the average reached 31.4 °C, 1.6 °C above the historical norm. Provinces such as Alborz, Sistan‑Baluchestan, Gilan, Mazandaran and Tehran recorded the largest departures, with Tehran reaching 27.2 °C against a normal of 25.8 °C.

In Afghanistan, the civil‑protection agency warned that temperatures in Balkh, Jowzjan, Helmand, Nimroz and Farah will exceed 45 °C through July 31. Officials have launched public‑awareness campaigns and prepared assistance for heat‑related injuries. Health experts cautioned that children, the elderly and outdoor workers face heightened risk, while residents describe heat‑induced illness, disruption of daily activities and increased demand for electricity to run cooling devices.
