Iran weather: extreme heat, storms, and air pollution
Overview
By late August 2026, Iran’s weather instability continued with widespread alerts for rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. Northern provinces, including Gilan, Mazandaran, and Golestan, as well as the highlands of Tehran, Alborz, and Semnan, faced forecasted showers and wind. In the south and southeast—specifically Hormozgan, Kerman, Sistan and Baluchestan, and parts of Fars—afternoon and evening rain showers were expected. Yellow warnings were issued for several provinces due to potential heavy winds and dust storms, particularly in eastern and central regions such as the Khorasan provinces, Yazd, Isfahan, and Qom. In Qom, wind speeds were forecasted to reach between 45 to 65 km/h, potentially impacting visibility.
Simultaneously, the country faced severe environmental challenges from extreme heat and air pollution. Dehlaran recorded 47.8°C, ranking as the second hottest location globally, while Zabol reached 47.5°C. High temperatures were also noted in Khuzestan, Sistan and Baluchestan, and Kerman. Air quality reached dangerous levels in several areas; Famenin in Hamadan province recorded an index of 500 due to dust storms, making it the most polluted area in the country. Other regions, including Asaluyeh and Pars 2 in Bushehr province and Meh in Fars province, reported unhealthy air quality levels exceeding 150, attributed largely to oil and gas industry activities.
