Iran and Oman Form Joint Committee to Manage Strait of Hormuz

Iran's parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf announced, via Telegram, that Iran and Oman have created a joint committee to oversee the management of the Strait of Hormuz. The committee was formalised after a high‑level meeting in Muscat between Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tariq and Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

The two states said the body will coordinate navigation rules, shipping costs and safety measures while respecting international regulations. Iran declared that the strait “will never return to its pre‑war condition” and that “Iran will govern” the waterway.

Recent traffic data from Kpler show only about 36 tanker vessels crossing the strait yesterday, roughly one‑third of the pre‑conflict level of around 120 ships per day. The strait, which was briefly reopened, was closed again in response to Israeli attacks on Lebanon. The United States has granted a licensing waiver, valid until 21 August, allowing Iranian oil‑related transactions and permitting Iranian tankers, previously under sanctions, to operate freely.

The committee also plans to consult other Gulf nations to ensure coordinated regional oversight of this strategic maritime corridor.
