US‑Iran escalation raises Strait of Hormuz tensions and oil prices

The United States launched a series of air‑strike waves on Iran, hitting dozens of military sites—including air‑defence systems, coastal radars, missile and drone installations, and small boats—to “degrade Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. One wave struck about 140 targets; over three nights more than 300 sites were hit. The attacks employed precision munitions and, for the first time, one‑way unmanned aerial and sea drones.

Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on U.S. facilities and bases in Gulf states such as Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Qatar and Oman, and announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, warning vessels to seek permission before sailing. Iranian state media reported one civilian death and several injuries in southwest Iran; the U.S. reported no U.S. casualties.

The exchange has sent global oil prices rising sharply—Brent crude up nearly 4%—and put the interim U.S.–Iran agreement aimed at reopening the strait and ending the war at risk. United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres called for restraint and a rapid return to negotiations. President Donald Trump asserted that the strait remains open and warned of intensified U.S. bombing if Iran does not cease attacks.
