Iran and US framework agreement expires without permanent peace deal

The 60-day framework agreement between the United States and Iran has expired without reaching a definitive long-term peace solution or a resolution regarding Iran’s nuclear program. While the memorandum of understanding initially provided a temporary reduction in hostilities and a brief reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, stability has since faltered.

Conflict persists in the region, with fragile ceasefires in Lebanon and continued threats from Houthi militias in Yemen. Maritime security remains volatile; ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has dropped significantly from pre-war levels of approximately 130 ships per day to between 10 and 20. Although the U.S. administration claimed to have neutralized certain Iranian missile capabilities, reports suggest these remain partially intact.

The expiration of the agreement leaves several critical issues unresolved, including the removal of international sanctions, the release of frozen Iranian funds, and the management of the Strait of Hormuz. The failure to secure a permanent deal has led to renewed threats of military escalation and potential disruptions to global oil supplies via the Bab al-Mandab strait.
