Iran and US grapple with difficult but doable ceasefire implementation

U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Washington will either reach a deal with Iran or “finish the job,” while Iran’s parliament speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the bilateral cease‑fire agreement is “difficult but achievable.” Ghalibaf told Iranian state television that Iran “is not at peace with the U.S. and will not recognise Israel,” and vowed “revenge” for the death of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei through the “liberation of Jerusalem.”

Negotiations have taken place in Doha and earlier in Switzerland, with indirect talks between Tehran and Washington showing “positive progress,” according to Qatar’s foreign ministry. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz threatened any Iranian leader who pursues plans to destroy Israel, saying U.S. and Israeli strikes have “severely damaged Iranian strategic capabilities.” A Financial Times poll cited in the coverage found 58 % of U.S. voters view the war with Iran as not worth its cost, and Trump’s popularity has slipped ahead of the November midterm elections.
