Iran arrests 6,000 protesters and executes dozens on security charges
Iranian authorities have arrested approximately 6,000 people in connection with anti-government protests that occurred in late 2025 and early 2026. Police Chief Ahmadreza Radan described the unrest as an attempted coup and stated that detainees would only be released if they express regret and repentance.
In addition to mass arrests, the Iranian judiciary has seized assets belonging to 240 dissidents, journalists, and public figures, including 143 cases in Tehran. The judiciary has also frozen 182 bank accounts. These measures target individuals accused of spreading propaganda or cooperating with hostile foreign governments.
Human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch and the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center, report a campaign of unlawful executions. They state that between March and August 2026, at least 59 men were executed on vague national security charges following unfair trials. These executions included teenagers aged 18 and 19, with some carried out in public.
