Iran asserts control over Strait of Hormuz amid US‑Iran diplomatic talks

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi declared that the Strait of Hormuz is under Iranian command and dismissed a U.S.-led regional security dialogue held in Bahrain, calling for end of U.S. interventions and respect for sovereign realities.

In a separate phone call, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi spoke with United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres about the implementation of a June memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington, which aims to end hostilities in the Hormuz region. The discussion covered recent indirect negotiations that involved meetings in Qatar and Pakistan, and the UN urged both sides to maintain restraint and continue work on the agreement’s 14 points. UN officials warned that renewed military exchanges could quickly escalate, while Iran emphasized its readiness to secure the waterway without external interference.
