Iran attacks UAE tankers in Strait of Hormuz, killing one crew member
Iran launched two cruise missiles at the United Arab Emirates oil tankers Mombasa and Al Bahiyah in the southern shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz, within Omani territorial waters, on 14 July 2026. The strikes killed one Indian crew member aboard the Mombasa and injured eight others – six Indians and two Ukrainians – four of them seriously. Fires on both vessels were quickly extinguished and the ships sustained material damage.
The UAE Ministry of Defence condemned the attack as a blatant violation of international law, calling it a threat to regional stability and asserting the right to respond. The United States reinstated a naval blockade of Iran, carried out further airstrikes against Iranian targets, and President Donald Trump announced a plan to charge ships tolls for passage through the strait. The escalation pushed Brent crude up about 8 % and West Texas Intermediate up roughly 2 %, reflecting heightened concerns over global energy supplies.
