Strait of Hormuz: Iran strikes tanker amid U.S. maritime control claims

Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated following an attack on the LPG tanker NV Sunshine in the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard claimed responsibility for the strike, asserting the vessel was using an “illegal route” south of the strait.

In response to the maritime instability, President Donald Trump stated that the U.S. military has established full control over the Strait of Hormuz and claimed that oil transit through the waterway has reached levels higher than before the conflict began. Conversely, Secretary of State Marco Rubio asserted that Iran has “lost complete control” of the strait, noting that oil flows are approaching pre-war levels.

President Trump also addressed broader geopolitical and economic issues, stating that the U.S. is engaged in “productive” dialogue with Iran and will not launch an attack before the November 3 midterm elections. He warned that Iran must meet U.S. demands or face existential consequences. Additionally, Trump announced an agreement with Russia to supply significant quantities of diesel to U.S. and global markets to help mitigate energy crises.

While the U.S. maintains a maritime blockade, CENTCOM has denied Iranian claims of a strait closure, stating that commercial navigation remains active and that the U.S. has successfully removed sea mines from the area.
