US-Iran strategic and military tensions

Overview

Tensions regarding the control of the Strait of Hormuz have intensified as the United States and Iran continue to dispute the status of the waterway. While the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) has claimed the strait is closed and under Tehran’s full control, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has dismissed these assertions, maintaining that the U.S. and its regional partners hold clear control.

Military instability escalated following reports that multiple supertankers caught fire after striking naval mines. On October 17, the IRGC Navy announced that two oil tankers caught fire. On October 19 and 20, the IRGC reported an additional incident involving a supertanker striking a sea mine. On October 21, a further tanker caught fire after striking a naval mine.

On that same day, the IRGC Navy claimed it had struck seven vessels in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media reported that four ships were targeted for engaging in “illegal ship-to-ship oil transfers” in the northern Gulf, while three other vessels reportedly struck naval mines west of the Strait. These claims, which have not been independently verified by maritime authorities such as the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), represent the highest single-day toll for vessels in the waterway since the conflict began on February 28.

The IRGC warned that if the United States continues to escort commercial vessels through the strait, confrontations could expand to include U.S. military bases. Tehran has also signaled a shift toward an asymmetrical defense doctrine, threatening to target infrastructure such as undersea cables and data centers. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump accused Tehran of fabricating the incidents to manipulate oil prices ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Following these reports, Brent crude oil prices rose to over $110 per barrel.
