Iran claims missile strike destroyed US F‑35 jets at Jordanian Al‑Azraq base
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it launched ballistic missiles at Jordan's Al‑Azraq (Muwaffaq Salti) air base, claiming the missiles destroyed three U.S. F‑35 fighter jets, caused serious damage to additional aircraft and killed several U.S. personnel. The attack was presented as retaliation for a U.S. strike on Iran's Qeshm island that killed a family.
Jordan's air defenses reported intercepting and shooting down five missiles launched from Iran, stating no casualties or material damage on its side. The United States has not confirmed the loss of the aircraft, while Iranian media released footage alleging the strike succeeded.
The exchange raises the risk of a broader regional escalation, putting the presence of U.S. forces in Jordan and other host nations at the centre of heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington.
