US-Iran conflict: Escalating strikes and maritime tension

Overview

The military conflict between the United States and Iran has intensified through direct exchanges of strikes near the Strait of Hormuz. Following U.S. bombardment of Iranian military infrastructure, the IRGC announced that U.S. forces bombed multiple locations along the southern Iranian coast, including civilian sites. In retaliation, the IRGC claimed to have downed an American MQ-9 drone.

Recent maritime escalations saw the IRGC launch ballistic missile attacks against a U.S. aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer. While the IRGC claimed these vessels sustained damage, U.S. Central Command reported the ships successfully evaded the attacks with no injuries, dismissing Iranian claims of damage as ‘totally false’. In response, U.S. forces targeted several Iranian oil tankers. Following the destruction of the M/T Kylo, U.S. forces struck five additional tankers—the M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1, M/T Riesco, and M/T Derya—near Kharg Island and in the Gulf of Oman. U.S. Central Command stated these vessels were part of a ‘billion-dollar network’ used to finance the IRGC. These strikes rendered the tankers unusable, and explosions were reported near the port area of Kharg Island.

In retaliation for the tanker strikes, the IRGC launched ballistic missiles targeting the Al-Azraq U.S. military base in Jordan. The Jordanian military reported intercepting 18 of the 20 incoming missiles. The IRGC also claimed to have intercepted and captured a U.S. Navy unmanned submersible, the Dive-LD, at the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. military downplayed the seizure, stating it was an older model that had malfunctioned.

Iran has since claimed responsibility for attacking 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz, including a drone strike on the Panama-flagged New Andros. Concurrently, the U.S. has expanded sanctions to include 27 Iranian airlines and 36 other entities. Global oil prices have risen above $100 per barrel amid the instability.
