Iran claims Qatari document confirms strikes targeted only US military facilities
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated that an official Qatari document submitted to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) confirms that Iranian military strikes in Qatar were directed exclusively at United States military facilities. Baghaei noted that, according to the document, no civilian areas were targeted.
The spokesman identified one exception: an attack on gas facilities at Ras Laffan on March 18, 2026. Baghaei argued that these facilities were targeted because they were being used to support US military aggression against Iran. The March 18 strike caused significant damage, reducing Qatar’s LNG export capacity by nearly 17% for a period of three to five years.
These strikes occurred following an aerial campaign launched by the US and Israel against Iranian targets in February 2026. The operations in Qatar included strikes near the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US military installation in the Middle East. While the ITU document assessed the current security risk to Qatar as low, Qatari authorities previously described the attacks as violations of sovereignty that hit civilian infrastructure, including an airport and energy facilities.
