Iran claims oil tankers struck naval mines in Strait of Hormuz

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced that oil tankers caught fire after striking naval mines in the southern section of the Strait of Hormuz. According to Iranian state media, the vessels were attempting to use unauthorized routes and had deactivated their GPS, radar, and AIS positioning systems in violation of regional regulations.

Reports on the scale of the incident vary. Some sources state that two tankers, each carrying approximately two million barrels of crude oil, were affected, while others report a single supertanker suffered a massive explosion and fire. One vessel was reportedly left immobilized following the strike.

These maritime incidents occur amid heightened regional tensions and a surge in attacks on commercial shipping. While the IRGC maintains it is exercising control over the waterway to ensure ordered transit, there has been no independent verification of the explosions or the involvement of naval mines. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported an incident involving an oil tanker and military forces near Oman but did not confirm casualties or damage.
