US launches strikes on Iran as Tehran shuts Strait of Hormuz

U.S. Central Command announced a third wave of attacks on Iran, striking about 140 military targets that included missile and drone sites, naval facilities, ammunition depots, communications networks and coastal surveillance stations. The strikes were a direct response to an incident in the Strait of Hormuz where Iran’s Revolutionary Guard fired warning shots at the Cyprus‑flagged container vessel GFS Galaxy, causing a fire, severe engine‑room damage and the loss of one crew member. Tehran subsequently announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz "until further notice" and claimed it had taken control of the waterway.

Washington has demanded that Iran publicly affirm that all channels of the strait remain open and cease attacks on commercial shipping. Iran has rejected the demand, accusing the United States of breaching a recent cease‑fire agreement, while U.S. President Donald Trump declared the cease‑fire over. Diplomatic talks are underway in Oman, where Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is meeting Omani officials. Tehran has also warned of retaliation against U.S. bases in the Gulf, citing recent missile and drone attacks on the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan.
