Iran condemns UK decision to label Revolutionary Guard a security threat

Iran’s foreign ministry sharply criticised the United Kingdom’s move to add the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to its list of national security threats, calling the step “hostile”, “unjustified” and “contrary to international law”. Tehran warned that the measure provokes escalation and said the UK must bear any political, legal and diplomatic consequences.

China, observing the heightened tensions in the Gulf region, expressed “deep concern” over renewed fighting and urged all parties to preserve the cease‑fire and ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The Chinese foreign ministry highlighted the need to protect civilian lives and maintain stable energy trade routes.

The UK announced that the listing, which also includes two other organisations, will be considered by Parliament under the 2026 National Security (State Threats) Act. If approved, it would be the first application of the law to such groups. The IRGC is already fully sanctioned by Britain. Tehran also blamed the United States and Israel for the regional instability and reserved the right to respond in accordance with international law.
