Scott Bessent warns Iran’s economy will have nothing left to trade within two weeks
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned that Iran’s economy will have “nothing left to trade” within approximately two weeks. This prediction follows the expected completion of Iran’s final oil deliveries to China, with Bessent noting that only about 15 million barrels of Iranian oil remain in transit.
The economic pressure is being intensified by the U.S. administration’s Operation Economic Outcast, a campaign targeting foreign entities that continue to conduct business with the Iranian regime. While Iranian officials recently proposed a seven-day ceasefire involving the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for unfreezing $12 billion in assets, President Trump rejected the proposal.
Simultaneously, Iran is exploring alternative trade routes via the Caspian Sea to bypass the U.S. naval blockade on its southern ports. However, declining water levels in the Caspian Sea—dropping by more than 20cm annually in recent years—have reduced the capacity of Iran’s northern ports, limiting them to 4,000-tonne vessels compared to their previous 6,000-tonne capacity.
