U.S. economic pressure and maritime blockade on Iran

Overview

Iran’s oil exports have reached a near-standstill following a U.S. maritime blockade and the expiration of a 60-day temporary agreement. According to Kpler data, Iranian crude oil exports dropped to an average of 287,000 barrels per day, a sharp decline from the 2 million barrels per day recorded prior to recent Middle East conflicts. The blockade has reportedly trapped over 40 million barrels of oil on tankers in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Abdolnaser Hemmati, Governor of the Central Bank of Iran, noted that the country is effectively unable to export oil while facing frozen foreign currency reserves.

As the situation evolves, global oil prices have declined in anticipation of intensified economic pressure. Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) prices fell as U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent prepared to detail a new sanctions package described as being “among the most severe in history.” While President Donald Trump has threatened penalties on countries that continue to trade with Iran, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for a diplomatic solution to the escalating tensions.
